I assume you've noticed, since I know that you all hang off my every word, that I haven't updated the bloggy in about a week. It's ok, nobody panic. I'm back now and back to being a little bit blog-crazy.
Truth be told, and I do NOT want this to be a rant post, life is sort of rubbish and way too complicated at the moment, and inspiration is at an all time low. However, no matter what's happening, life still goes on, and that's where how you deal becomes the fun part. This is a post about how I deal. Stop by when you need cheering up. Mwah!

The MLHL rainy day action plan
Download some fonts. On a bad day, most girls will treat themselves to a new pair of shoes. Me? I download some new fonts. I LOVE fonts, and there are so many great free ones out there. Go over here, or over here, and pick yourself up something pretty.
Then go and buy some shoes. What? I am a girl, remember. And I do love playing up to the stereotype.
Eat this with this, or this with this, or perhaps this with this. Oh, and of course, one of these.
Alphebetize your DVD collection, clip your toenails, do the ironing or whatever weird crap you find therapeutic.
Watch this:
Then this:
And if it's really bad, watch this:
Find the right song for your mood:
- music to empathise with (because sometimes it's ok to eat ice cream straight from the tub and feel sorry for yourself): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9xsGJMD_NU
- music to be angry and shouty to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkuOAY-S6OY
- or, if you're over being over it, music to dance around your living room and celebrate life to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by5zsYzN45g
Read these blogs. You're welcome.
Do something for someone else. It's a well known fact that nothing is as effective at making us smile as making someone else smile. Want proof? I dare you to stay miserable as you Photoshop your girlfriends face over Bella's in the latest Twilight movie poster. Send encouraging texts, just because. Make someone a present. Comment on my blog.
Try to remember it's not the end of the world. Unless it is, in which case, eat lots of bacon, wear some ghastly garish shade of lipstick, and blog everything you ever thought about anyone, starting with your readers.
Comment me your rainy day coping mechanisms. What do you eat/do/play/imagine/watch/shout/dream/listen to when life gets you down?

I love this Mel! I love FONTS! I'm a big nerd when it comes to typefaces etc. It really does make all the difference. Also, I always wear ghastly lipstick when I blog - guess it's the end of the world (just kidding about the lipstick...though I have a hot pink shade that I wish I could wear more often.)
ReplyDeleteI remember the time i was learning how to write my name in Katakana when i was in Japan. I had fun in that site Mel. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteFor your questions, here is my answer:
During rainy days I used to...
EAT chocolate porridge
DO read my favorite book
PLAY scrabble
IMAGINE/DREAm i am with someone haha!
WATCH whatever tv show caught my attention
LISTEN to all my favorite music
I thought, when you were down, you bugged me until I went online and we chatted for awhile.
ReplyDeletePlus, ice cream and popcorn? Oreos and peanut butters? I'm not one to yuck someone's yum, but...what drove you to test those tastes together? (How's that for alliteration?)
Allison - Wait, do you for realz wear bright lipstick when you blog? Because I have this pair of insanely high, red heels I wear when I write, because they're too tall for me to stand in but I love them so much.
ReplyDeleteMish - Chocolate porridge? That sounds ghastly. I'm fairly sure that if I tried it, it would become my new favourite food ever.
Greg - In my experience, if someone tells you to taste a strange food combination and you think it sounds vile, it will probably be the most amazing thing you've ever tasted. That's how I discovered both of those. Lesson learned: do as you're told.
I'll respond with what I do when I need to wallow at work because I'm having the world's worst day and my life is exploding all around me:
ReplyDeleteice cream. with a twix bar smushed in.
And if that doesn't work, I'll drink myself into a stupor that evening. I'll either wake up feeling like I've got it out of my system...or I'll wake up feeling exactly like my heart does: like utter and complete shite.
Will come back with less shitty answers post-work. x

ReplyDeleteThat's my angry, fucked off dance. And the song works too.
The Jam, fuck yeah.
This is a fantastic post. I think I may have to create my own list.
Also. We need to skype, yes? *hug* x
Yes Mel, a chocolate rice porridge. We call it Champorado. It's really simple to make. You can google it.
ReplyDeleteMy girlfriend in a weird way love downloading, and using fonts, too! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't actually - but I should.
ReplyDeleteI totally have shoes like that - completely impractical, but too fabulous to pass up!
I buy lingerie.
ReplyDeleteIf I have transport, I go out for a cup of tea. I have my tea black and they never put cold water in the top (or at least not enough) so it gives me half an hour of sitting and thinking.
Thanks for the font links!
I'm not very proactive at these things, but after I got the glandular fever, all my coping mechanisms fell back on the task of Sleeping Excessively.
ReplyDeleteEither that, or I watch Gilmore Girls. Becuase I love that show. I pretty much want to be Lorelai Gilmore. With her wardrobe, because for the most part, she's a snappy dresser.
Or I eat tim tams.
Or cuddle my dog. He gives some good hugs.
I LOVE new fonts! I'll browse for new ones when I'm at school having a bad morning with my students sometimes.
ReplyDeleteAnd as for the strangely therapeutic household chores, I love washing and folding the laundry and organising books and DVDs as well.
Then I fire up the DVD/DVR/Netflix on Wii and watch things like Buffy, Gilmore Girls, or Footballers' Wives.
As for your questions,
ReplyDeleteSpaghetti/Listen to podcasts without pause/Solitaire/Rainbows/Discovery Health/Weeeird things/See 2.
Shoooot.

Thanks for finding me. Loooove your blog!
ReplyDeleteI actually like rainy days, and end up listening to sad music and making art. Yeah, I like getting myself sad sometimes. Weird huh? :)
Dori.
I play with pretty glass beads, or go hunting for sea glass on the beach, or dance to music in my kitchen. Don't be down - I have something for you! (Have an exam but will send it to you after)
ReplyDeleteThank you everyone for your comments. Sorry I've been so slack with commenting back. Just so you know, I love you all and I absolutely appreciate your comments. In fact, my self esteem occasionally depends on them. I kid. Sort of..
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I might use your suggestions in a follow up blog post, so keep them coming. <3
In order to make yourself feel better, you should do what I do.
ReplyDeleteWash all the day's crap off of your face, clean it real good and then start all over. Put on gorgeous, beautiful, night-out-with-the-girls make-up on. Eye liner, gobs of mascara, etc, etc. And then take pictures of yourself. Do a million different angles, preferably with a mirror behind the camera so that you can kind of see what you're doing. It makes for a directed photo shoot. Ha.
Makes me feel better every time.
I just read this, and I was almost sad for a second because I thought I was too late to comment! I know that I'm nearly a year late in discovering your genius, but I love this post! I stumbled on it at a perfect time; my day was rotten! I came home, got some ice cream and a glass of coke, watched a funny movie, and read your blog. Life is still bleak, but at least I'm in a better mood!
